Centennial High School captured the first Treasure Valley high school girls flag football championship

BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — History was made on the fields of the Optimist Youth Sports Complex as Centennial High School captured the first Treasure Valley high school girls flag football championship with a 50-6 win against Rocky Mountain. The title game capped the inaugural Treasure Valley High School Flag Football League season, with Rocky Mountain and Centennial meeting after trading results earlier in the year. Centennial shut out Rocky Mountain 42-0 early in the season, but later Rocky Mountain responded with a 32-14 win over Centennial. In the championship game, Centennial left little doubt about the outcome, pairing a 50-point offensive performance with a defense that pressured Rocky Mountain’s offense throughout the game. For players, the new league offered a chance to compete in a sport many grew up watching. “My brothers played football, my dad knows football pretty well so it’s just something I decided to pick up,” Centennial player Hattie Meyet said. The league grew from a Boise State clinic at the beginning of the season into a full league built by players throughout the Treasure Valley. Centennial player Jaylen Matsushita said the mix of athletic backgrounds helped shape the teams. “We all have different strengths in different areas because of the other sports we play and it’s just a good environment and everyone’s super nice,” she said. Organizers said the championship is part of a larger effort to expand girls flag football across the region. “We want to get to the point where we have a team in every high school. And we want to get to the point where the Idaho High School Athletic Association says ‘Ok, it’s reached the time, we should make it a high school sport,’” said Jerron Moore, President of Optimist Youth Football. “And at that point in time we will hand them the keys to the engine if you will and we’ll walk away.”
