Pope John Paul II girls’ flag football coach Danny Clavier couldn’t help but smile when he looked back on the Jaguars’ inaugural season.
“I was really proud of them, especially for our first season,” Clavier said. “To be undefeated district champs in our first season is special. The districts aren’t divided up by size like the other sports. There is only one group in our area.”
The Jaguars locked up an undefeated district title with an 8-0 regular season record. Their district included Kenner Discovery, Bonnabel, Northlake Christian, St. Helena, Hannan and Chalmette.
PJP II opened the playoffs with a victory before a 6-0 loss to Dominican on April 27 to finish with a 9-1 record.
The team of 22 girls included a mix of eighth-graders all the way up to the squad’s six seniors. The Jaguars also had a large mix of multisport athletes, including teammates who also played soccer, volleyball, basketball, track, tennis and powerlifting.
