Minnesota Girls Flag Football Nears Major Milestone with Emerging Sport Proposal
Source: GridironHer Staff · By GridironHer Staff · May 30, 2026
Minnesota could become one of the next states to move girls flag football toward full sanctioning as the Minnesota State High School League considers granting Emerging Sport status beginning in the 2026-27 school year.
Minnesota is taking another significant step in the growth of girls flag football.
The Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors is scheduled to consider a proposal that would grant girls flag football Emerging Sport status beginning in the 2026-27 school year. If approved, the move would place the sport on a pathway toward eventual full sanctioning.
The growth has been remarkable. Participation expanded from just four schools in 2024 to 51 schools in 2025, with organizers projecting more than 100 programs by 2026. The rapid increase reflects the national momentum surrounding girls flag football as states continue adding varsity and emerging programs.
Support from the Minnesota Vikings has been a major factor. Since 2022, the organization has invested more than $2 million into growing the sport, helping schools launch programs and creating additional opportunities for female athletes.
As flag football continues its march toward inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games and expansion at the collegiate level, Minnesota's decision could become one of the most important developments in the Midwest this year.
