Minnesota Programs Lead the Charge for Girls Flag Football Growth
Source: GridironHer Staff · By GridironHer Staff · May 30, 2026
Minnesota schools are helping drive one of the fastest-growing girls flag football movements in the nation.
The story of girls flag football in Minnesota is really the story of dozens of schools that embraced a new opportunity for female athletes.
In only two years, participation has expanded from a handful of programs to more than 50 schools, with projections showing more than 100 programs next season. Coaches, athletic directors, and school administrators across the state have worked together to create sustainable opportunities for girls to compete.
The Minnesota High School Girls Flag Football League, supported by the Minnesota Vikings, has become a model for how states can successfully launch and grow the sport.
With Emerging Sport status now under consideration, Minnesota programs are proving that grassroots support and strong community partnerships can accelerate the development of girls flag football.
