CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Girls flag football in North Carolina reached a major milestone Wednesday as the NCHSAA officially sanctioned the sport at the varsity level, unlocking expanded opportunities for high school athletes statewide. The move caps years of momentum driven in large part by the Carolina Panthers and The David & Nicole Tepper Foundation. Since 2022, the initiative has grown from just 19 schools and 500 athletes to more than 200 high schools and over 3,000 participants across North and South Carolina. “This is a transformative moment for girls across the state,” said Riley Fields, director of communications relations for the Carolina Panthers. “Varsity recognition validates the athletes who have already been competing at a high level and opens the door for so many more to experience the game.” The growth effort has included more than $1.5 million in grants, programming and resources to support schools launching teams and building sustainable programs. That commitment deepened this week with a newly announced $1 million investment from The David & Nicole Tepper Foundation, aimed at expanding access and supporting continued development of girl's flag football programs in both states. “We’ve seen firsthand how quickly this sport can grow when barriers are removed,” Fields added. “This additional funding ensures schools have what they need—equipment, coaching support and infrastructure—to keep that momentum going.” The Panthers’ involvement has helped create a pipeline of opportunities, while also aligning with broader national interest in girls flag football. With varsity status now in place and new funding on the way, North Carolina is positioned to remain a leader in one of the fastest-growing high school sports in the country, giving the next generation of athletes more chances to compete, connect and thrive.
