How the P-CEP Prowlers snuck into the girls flag football playoffs
Source: Hometown Life · By Brandon Folsom · May 20, 2026
The Prowlers needed their best defensive effort of the season to beat Lincoln and earn a playoff berth.
P-CEP co-coach Derek Hoffman’s heart never stopped racing, while the other co-coach, Eric Newton, thought he was having a heart attack.
In arguably the best game of the Michigan Girls High School Flag Football League regular season in metro Detroit, it didn’t matter how many points the Prowlers scored in their 19-6 win over Ypsilanti Lincoln on May 17.
All that mattered was how many they allowed.
The victory created a three-way tie atop the All Grit League, with P-CEP, Northville and Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard all finishing 3-1. The standings came down to third- and fourth-level tiebreakers and, essentially, which team surrendered the fewest points.

Following Northville’s 20-0 win over FGR one night earlier, the stakes were simple. If P-CEP gave up six points or fewer to Lincoln, it qualified for the state tournament. If it allowed seven or more, the Mustangs earned the playoff berth.

And, boy, was Northville THIS close to making the postseason.
Twice, actually.
Seven seconds before halftime, Lincoln quarterback Ava Greene tossed a 58-yard touchdown pass to Makenzie Palmer, who was somehow left unguarded, a rare mix-up for the Prowlers’ defense, which had given up just one score all season until that moment.

P-CEP’s playoff hopes literally came down to the ensuing 3-yard extra point, which, fortunately for the Prowlers, saw Greene throw out of bounds.
“That PAT still has my heart racing,” Hoffman said after celebrating the victory on the west end of the track at Canton High School’s North Turf. “It’s that PAT that our defense got a stop on that was the difference — one single point was the difference with this tiebreaker.”

That, and the final play of the game.
Recognizing the Railsplitters could play spoilers for P-CEP’s season, Lincoln’s offense never wavered, especially late.
Greene, who finished 7 of 24 passing for 141 yards, marched Lincoln down the field on the final drive and set up one last play with 1 second remaining. She launched a Hail Mary toward the end zone, but P-CEP defensive back Charlotte Williams batted the pass away to officially clinch a berth in the state tournament May 30-31 in downtown Detroit.

“I just told them before the play that if they scored, we weren’t going to Ford Field, so you better back up and make a play,” Newton said.

And making plays is what the Prowlers’ defense has done all season. In fact, it wasn’t even at fault for putting P-CEP in this situation.
During an 8-6 loss to the Irish in Week 3, the offense surrendered every point, including FGR's Reagan Fault returning an interception 42 yards for a TD on the opening drive and a game-winning safety by pass rusher Violet Culp with under a minute left.

The only offensive touchdown the defense had allowed all season came in Week 1 against rival Northville.
“It was disappointing coming into this game under that situation,” said Newton, who leads the defense alongside coordinator Matt Penn. “But we knew, with the staff and the players that we have, that we were in a very, very good position today, even when they scored the first one. I thought I was going to have a heart attack, but the girls rallied, just how they’ve rallied all year. Matt Penn’s done a great job with the defense, and he gets those girls ready to play every week.”
Which is saying something because the Prowlers rotate 14-20 players on defense during games, depending on the opponent’s personnel.
“There was definitely a lot of pressure on us today, but it’s fun to play under pressure,” said linebacker Natalie Jordan, the heart and soul of the Prowlers’ defense. “Pressure gives you something to play for, especially in these win-or-go-home games.”

And the defense thrived in the moment.
P-CEP's Breanna Whitlock returns an interception during a Michigan Girls High School Flag Football League game on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Canton High School.
Kennedy Neyhart broke up two passes, while Alyvia Poirier, Jordan and Williams each had one.
In the first half, Breanna Whitlock intercepted a pass and returned it 31 yards to set up Charlie Lindstrom’s 14-yard TD pass to Alyssa Rankin.
Midway through the second half, Poirier’s interception set up Lindstrom’s 5-yard TD pass to Jordin Harper to seal the victory.
“Obviously, our offense played well, which was fantastic, but our defense was just amazing as always,” Hoffman said. “Our defense let up two touchdowns in four games. Last week’s eight points, that was on me. Our offense stepped up today, but our defense was amazing, and we’re going to Ford Field because of them, baby.”

The defense will get a chance to test itself against some of the best offenses out there at the state tournament, needing to win four games to claim a championship.
The Prowlers open with Redford Thurston in Round 1 at 3:30 p.m. May 30. The Eagles upset state power and rival Redford Union to win the Motor City Muscle League at 4-0 and will not be an easy out, especially with Thurston athletic director Lawrence Reeves on the coaching staff. If anyone knows P-CEP, it’s Reeves, whose daughter Raechel plays for the Prowlers.

But the Prowlers are excited for the opportunity. Their defense has carried them this far. Don’t expect them to back down after proving themselves against Lincoln. Even if it means future cardiac appointments for their coaches.
“The girls have a lot of confidence when they get in there,” Newton said. “They’ve bought into our system and know they’re going to get their reps and make plays when they get the chance.”
